A Taste To Start

❝

It is a fact that when you change a girl’s life, you affect her vision of herself, her immediate world, and the world that she will have an impact on.

Letter From The Tastemaker

Valentine’s Day is sweet.
But for a Slavic woman, the 8th of March is sacred.

Growing up, Women’s Day was one of the most anticipated days of the year. Fathers, husbands, sons would buy flowers, and not for one woman, but for all the women in their lives. Mothers. Daughters. Sisters. Colleagues.

It wasn’t conditional.

A woman didn’t need to be married. Or a mother. Or extraordinary in any public sense. Her value wasn’t tied to achievement or status.

She was acknowledged for her simple contributions: her softness, her strength, her nurturing presence. For the invisible architecture she holds together for everyone else.

As early March symbolized the coming of Spring, the blossoming of flowers, planting new seeds, so did this day mark a renewal of devotion. Femininity, beauty, and love were the standards. And this devotion, it simply mirrored nature itself.

In essence, you nurture what nurtures you.

And yet, beyond the bouquets and gestures, there is a larger truth: women have shaped not only hearts, but history, often quietly, and without seeking recognition.

Katherine Johnson calculated orbital trajectories critical to NASA missions.
β†’ She described herself as β€œjust doing my job,” unaware her work would be celebrated decades later in Hidden Figures.

Ada Lovelace wrote the first algorithm for Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine.
β†’ She considered it β€œjust an exercise in logic,” not foreseeing the birth of computing.

Virginia Apgar created the Apgar Score to evaluate newborn health.
β†’ She thought she was making a small clinical tool, not a life-saving standard used worldwide.

A key pattern of these women is they often:

  1. Underestimated the impact of their own work.

  2. Faced systemic barriers, making it easier to downplay achievements.

  3. Created innovations that transformed industries decades later.

  4. Modeled persistence, curiosity, and problem-solving without expectation of fame.

It was never about a lack of brilliance. Or even a lack of belief. Many women knew exactly what they were capable of but they were simply more committed to the work than to the spotlight.

Recognition is rarely about expectation and more about self-worth, a worth that is not tied to accolades and pretty flowers…

But I must say, it feels great to be cherished and appreciated by the people who know you.

When an entire country pauses to recognize women and the quiet, immeasurable ways they move society forward, it shifts the perspective on what everyday leaders can do in their own professional environments…

So, on this day (and in celebration of Women’s History Month), may you take a moment to pause and reflect on the women in your life that make a difference no matter how small.

To be what we seek in others, we must first embody that standard in ourselves:

β†’ If you want a culture of respect, you treat people respectfully…
β†’ If you want honesty in a team or community, you practice accountability…
β†’ If you want others to value their contributions, you acknowledge the significance of their work (sometimes before they see it themselves)…

To this day my father brings flowers to all three women in his life: my mother, sister and myself (and congratulates by phone those who live far).

It’s a day about respect, appreciation and deep admiration. It’s a day for all women.
In fact it is so dear that women tend to congratulate and gift each other as well.

A great leader is revealed by the doors they open for others.
Let’s model that in our own lives.

Sometimes leadership is so simple: just open the door.
